Michael Harbour, with his strong sense of values and determination, has given him the opportunity to experience an amazing 25-year career as a Class “A” PGA member. His dedications to his health and fitness have granted him the respect and admiration of his family and friends, as well as his colleagues and students. Mike’s ability and commitment as a golf instructor and coach has given him a successful track record of helping golfers of all levels aspire to greatness.
Mike has had the privilege of working with some of golf’s top professionals such as: Pat Sheehan and Bart Bryant, who are both current members of the PGA Tour and LPGA member, Anna Grzebien. In addition, Mike has had the opportunity to work extensively with many of Rhode Island’s best amateurs, collegiate and high school players.
As former Director of Golf and Men’s & Women’s Golf Coach at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, Mike knows what it takes to compete and achieve at the highest levels of collegiate, amateur and professional golf. He was also Golf Coach at Johnson and Wales University where Mike earned the prestigious GNACC Golf Coach of the Year honors in 2001.
Not only is Mike a great teacher, but also he is a student of the game himself. He has taken lessons from and has studied philosophies of prominent instructors such as Hank Haney, and Jim Hardy. Most recently, Mike had the opportunity to work with the hottest putting expert on the PGA Tour, Dave Stockton, Jr.
Mike also has had immense private golf club experience as a member of the PGA. Mike was the Director of Golf at Mike Harbour’s Golf and Learning Center in Exeter, Rhode Island, where he developed a learning center that covered all golf aspects. He was the head golf professional at Potowomut Golf Club (RI) from 1989-1999. While at Potowomut, Mike was named the Golf Professional of the Year and Teaching Professional of the Year by the Rhode Island Chapter of the PGA. He also served as the head golf professional at the Lone Tree Country Club in Littleton, Colorado from 1992-1993.
He majored in Business Management at Rhode Island Community College from 1975-1977, and earned PGA Business School I & II certificates from 1982-1985. He earned a Business School III advanced professional training in 1995.
In addition, Mike believes that it is important to give back to the game of golf. Over the last several years, Mike has been instrumental in teaching physically and mentally challenged individuals the game of golf. Over the last decade, he has devoted much of his time and shared his passion of golf by working with First Swing Rhode Island. While working with First Swing Rhode Island, Mike taught clinics, workshops, and continues today to offer individualized golf instruction at Mulligan’s Island. Also, the facility has the necessary equipment that the physically challenged golfers may use on the grounds. The organization named an award to recognize other’s commitment to helping the mentally and physically challenged “The Mike Harbour ‘Making an Impact’ Award”.
