BUNKER LOB SHOT
by Mike Harbour, PGA Professional
Most golfers often fear the "Lob Shot" over the sand bunker... However, fear no more! With three simple and easy to remember steps you can not only land your shot safely on the green, but also stick it close for an easy ”tap-in” to save par or better!
Bunker Lob Shot Set-Up
Now, here are the three easy steps to properly executing the Bunker Lob Shot:
1. Weight Distribution: Most of your weight will be on the left leg (80% - 90%). (Right-handed golfers use left leg, left-handed golfers use right leg for reference).
2. Ball Position: The ball will be placed toward the left foot and approximately two or three inches inside the left foot.
3. Swing: The swing will be half way back to approximately three-quarters through. The most important aspect of the Lob Shot is reaching the flag (material part of stick) to ensure going over the bunker.
Bunker Lob Shot Practice Suggestions
Once you have become proficient at getting the ball over the bunker, then practice at getting the ball closer to your target. Vary ball position slightly based on lie and pin placement in your practice sessions and note where your ball finishes relative to the pin.
Making a divot is also extremely important in getting the ball airborne.
THE SAND SHOT
by Mike Harbour, PGA Professional
Sand Shot Equipment and Set-Up
Equipment: You will need your sand wedge for this shot. The BOUNCE of the sand wedge, as explained in the lesson is very important to ‘popping’ the ball out of the sand.
Weight Distribution: The "Sand Shot" needs 80% of your weight on the left leg. Keeping the weight distribution on the left leg will also aid in you making a descending strike into the sand to push the ball out. Remember you must hit down into the sand to make the ball come out.
Ball Position: Ball position will be placed toward the left foot approximately two - 3 inches inside the left foot.
Stance: Aim your FACE OF THE CLUB to the target and aim your body to the left of target to insure that you will be using the sand wedge the proper way.
The swing, in most cases, will be shoulder high in back swing to shoulder high in follow through.
